  10. install and run Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0.

  50. INSTALLING PC CARD (PCMCIA) MODEMS
  51. ==================================

  53. If you are using a PC card (PCMCIA) modem for your Dial-Up 
  54. Networking connection to the Internet and have not yet installed 
  55. the modem, you might have to enable Windows 95 PC card socket 
  56. support before you run the Internet Setup wizard.  
  57.  
  58. To enable PCMCIA socket support:
  59.  
  60. - In Control Panel, double-click the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon to 
  61.   start the PC Card wizard, and then follow the instructions on 
  62.   your screen.
  63.  
  64.   NOTE: If you can't find the PC Card icon, you might need to install 
  65.         the PC card (PCMCIA) drivers. To do this, carry out the 
  66.         following steps:
  67.  
  68.         1. In Control Panel, double-click the Add New Hardware icon, 
  69.            and then click Next.
  70.         2. Click No, and then click Next.
  71.         3. In the list of hardware types, double-click PCMCIA Socket.
  72.         4. Select the appropriate manufacturer and model, click Next, 
  73.            and then follow the instructions on your screen.

  76. USING A LOCAL AREA NETWORK PROXY OR FIREWALL
  77. ============================================
  78.  
  79. If you want to use a proxy or firewall to protect your Local Area 
  80. Network from being accessed by others on the Internet, carry out 
  81. the following steps:
  82.  
  83. 1. Run the Internet Setup Wizard:
  84.  
  85.    - Click the Start button, point to Programs, and then point to 
  86.      Accessories.
  87.    - Point to Internet Tools, and then double-click Internet Setup 
  88.      Wizard.
  89.  
  90. 2. Configure your computer to connect to the Internet by using 
  91.    TCP/IP on your local area network. 
  92.  
  93. 3. When you are prompted for the gateway address, type the 
  94.    address supplied by your network administrator only if your 
  95.    organization uses gateways for routing information over the 
  96.    network.
  97.  
  98.    NOTE: The gateway computer is not the same as the proxy or 
  99.          firewall computer that protects your local area network 
  100.          from the Internet, so do not type your proxy or firewall 
  101.          address here.
  102.  
  103. 4. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click 
  104.    Control Panel.
  105.  
  106. 5. Double-click the Internet icon, and then click the Connection 
  107.    tab.
  108.  
  109. 6. In the Proxy area, selected the Connect To The Internet Through 
  110.    A Proxy Server check box.
  111.  
  112. 7. Click the Change Proxy Settings button.
  113.  
  114. 8. In the first text box, type the HTTP server address for the 
  115.    computer you want to use as the proxy server. In the second text 
  116.    box, type the port number. The following is an example of a proxy 
  117.    server and port number:
  118.  
  119.    http://myproxy.mycompany.com:80
  120.  
  121.    In this example, you would type "http://myproxy.mycompany.com" in
  122.    the first text box, and "80" in the second text box.
  123.  
  124.    You can use a different proxy for different types of addresses.
  125.    However, if you want to use the same proxy for all types of 
  126.    addresses, make sure you select the Use Same Proxy Server For All 
  127.    Addresses check box.
  128.  
  129. 9. In the Exceptions area, click in the text box and then type the 
  130.    names of the computers, domains, and ports on the Internet that,
  131.    when accessed, will not go through the proxy server. Separate each 
  132.    item you type with a semicolon. If you do not know what to type 
  133.    here, see your network administrator.
  134.  
  135.    If you do not want to use the proxy for local addresses, make sure 
  136.    you select the Do Not Use Proxy For Local (Intranet) Addresses 
  137.    check box. Local addresses are defined as those where the server 
  138.    name does not have a period (".") in it. For example:
  139.  
  140.    http://internalweb/        is a local address.
  141.    http://www.microsoft.com/  is not a local address.
  142.  
  143.    For Help on these items, click the ? in the title bar, and then 
  144.    click the item. 
  145.  
  146. 10. When you have finished changing settings, click OK to close the 
  147.    Proxy Settings dialog box.
  148.  
  149. 11. Click OK again to close the Internet properties in Control Panel. 
  150.    If you are running Internet Explorer, you will need to restart your 
  151.    computer so that the new proxy settings can take effect.

  154. USING PROGRESSIVE NETWORKS' REALAUDIO SUPPORT
  155. =============================================
  156.  
  157. Microsoft Internet Explorer includes support for Progressive Networks' 
  158. RealAudio. This enables you to listen to audio files in real time over 
  159. a dial-up modem or direct-network Internet connection. To use RealAudio, 
  160. you must have a Windows 95-supported sound card installed in your 
  161. computer. RealAudio works best on 486/33 or faster processors.
  162.  
  163. To try RealAudio, connect to http://www.realaudio.com.
  164.  
  165. NOTE: RealAudio will not work if your connection is routed through 
  166.       a local area network proxy or firewall.

  169. USING INTERNET EXPLORER WITH VIRTUAL MEMORY
  170. ===========================================
  171.  
  172. Internet Explorer requires you to use virtual memory. Otherwise, 
  173. Internet Explorer does not run properly. To make sure you are using 
  174. virtual memory:
  175.  
  176. 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click 
  177.    Control Panel.
  178.  
  179. 2. Double-click the System icon, and then click the Performance tab.
  180.  
  181. 3. Click Virtual Memory.
  182.  
  183. 4. If you are specifying your own virtual memory settings, clear the 
  184.    Disable Virtual Memory check box. If this check box is selected, 
  185.    then you are not using virtual memory and Internet Explorer will 
  186.    not run.
  187.  
  188.    TIP: You can set Windows to manage virtual memory for you by 
  189.         selecting the Let Windows Manage My Virtual Memory check 
  190.         box.

  193. USING INTERNET EXPLORER 2.0 ALONG WITH 3.0
  194. ==========================================

  196. When you install Internet Explorer 3.0, Internet Explorer 2.0 
  197. is automatically renamed and left in place. Therefore, you can 
  198. continue to use Internet Explorer 2.0 alongside 3.0.
  199.  
  200. To use Internet Explorer 2.0, open the folder where you installed
  201. Internet Explorer 3.0 (usually in C:\Program Files) and then 
  202. double-click the Ie20 or Ie20.exe icon. For quicker access to 
  203. Internet Explorer 2.0, you may want to drag this icon to your 
  204. desktop or Start menu.
  205.  
  206. NOTE FOR PROXY USERS: At this time, Internet Explorer 2.0 and 3.0 
  207. use the same proxy settings in the registry. This can cause problems 
  208. if you are using separate proxies for different protocols. To change 
  209. your registry settings so that Internet Explorer 2.0 can use the 
  210. proxy, carry out the following steps:
  211.  
  212. 1. In Control Panel, double-click the Internet icon.
  213.  
  214. 2. Click the Connection tab, and then click Change Proxy Settings.
  215.  
  216. 3. Make sure that you selected the Use Same Proxy Server For All 
  217.    Types Of Addresses check box, and then click OK.

  220. REVERTING TO INTERNET EXPLORER 2.0
  221. ==================================
  222.  
  223. If you want to remove Internet Explorer 3.0 and return to using 
  224. Internet Explorer 2.0, you currently need to uninstall Internet 
  225. Explorer 3.0 and then reinstall Internet Explorer 2.0. To do this, 
  226. carry out the following steps:
  227.  
  228. 1. Go to the Internet Explorer home page by opening 
  229.    http://www.microsoft.com in your browser, and then clicking the 
  230.    Microsoft Internet Explorer Free Download graphic on the left 
  231.    side of the page.
  232.  
  233. 2. Locate the correct link for downloading Internet Explorer 2.0. 
  234.    Right-click it, and then click Save Target As.
  235.  
  236. 3. Choose a filename.
  237.  
  238.    NOTE: If you are using Internet Explorer 3.0, you need to 
  239.          include the .exe extension; for example, msie20.exe.
  240.  
  241. 4. To save the file, click Save.
  242.  
  243. 5. In Control Panel, double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. 
  244.    Uninstall Internet Explorer 3.0 by choosing it from the list, 
  245.    and then clicking Add/Remove. Click OK.
  246.  
  247. 6. Locate your new Internet Explorer 2.0 .exe file, and then 
  248.    double-click the icon to reinstall Internet Explorer 2.0.

  251. KNOWN ISSUES
  252. ============
  253.  
  254. Internet Explorer 3.0 Does Not Yet Support Security
  255. ---------------------------------------------------
  256. Internet Explorer 3.0 does not support authentication to a Windows NT 
  257. Internet Information Server.

  259. Internet Explorer 3.0 Does Not Work with Catapult Beta 1
  260. --------------------------------------------------------
  261. Internet Exlorer 3.0 is designed to work over CERN-compatible proxy 
  262. servers. Catapult Beta 1 is not CERN-compatible, but Catapult Beta 2 
  263. will be CERN-compatible. Until Catapult Beta 2 is available, you can 
  264. use one of the following proxy servers:
